Is the length of the template string limited in any way?
The manual mentions a maximum of 320 character for the
OCR text but nothing for the template string itself.

The question arises when the property is read. 

If a user template string is set, does SwiftDecoder copy the
template internally or just handle the reference to it?

The space to store the user template is stored in a malloced string internally in SwiftDecoder. There is no artificial limit. The string is copied into that internal storage and that is the copy that is referenced when the user template property is read.
